Dimapur, June 5 -- Highlighting environmental challenges in Nagaland, Environment, Forests & Climate Change Minister CL John identified forest fires, particularly jungle burning for cultivation purposes, as a major cause of environmental degradation.

Addressing a programme to mark World Environment Day at the Kohima Peace Memorial & Eco Park on Friday, John expressed concern over the continued prevalence of hunting, noting that forests require birds and wildlife to maintain ecological balance.

Calling for a conservation movement, he said, just as the practice of headhunting in the state had been abandoned, society should also work toward ending the hunting of animals and birds.
