Shillong, July 11 -- Five people, including two brothers who had rushed to rescue three workers, died allegedly due to asphyxiation inside a well in the Lapalang area here in Meghalaya, police said on Saturday.

Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said the tragic incident occurred on Friday night when workers cleaning a well at a private construction site got suffocated after inhaling toxic fumes from a water-pumping generator inside a well.

He said one of the workers managed to get out of the well and sought help.

Two brothers, identified as Sunil Thakuri and Umesh Thakuri, entered the well to rescue the three workers but also died of suffocation, Syiem said.
