Patna, Aug. 23 -- The political battle over the Farakka Barrage and the India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Sharing Treaty intensified in Bihar with the BJP and JD(U) accusing RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav of compromising the state''s interests in 1996, while Yadav hit back by claiming that his government had consistently opposed the barrage.
Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi today said the state''s water interests were paramount and asserted that Bihar, under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, would not compromise on its rights.
Saraogi pointed out that the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty was signed in 1996 when Lalu Prasad was the Bihar Chief Minister and had considerable political influence at both the state and Centre.
