Brussels, May 23 -- EU member states moved to adopt a fresh wave of sanctions against Iranian officials and entities on Friday, after accusing them of helping reinforce Tehran's restrictions in the vital Strait of Hormuz corridor, amid mounting tensions over the strategic waterway.
Slamming Iran's actions as being "contrary to international law", EU governments approved a technical measure expanding the scope of the bloc's existing Iran sanctions regime, allowing additional individuals and organisations to be targeted.
"The EU will now be able to introduce further restrictive measures in response to Iran's actions undermining the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," the European Council said in a statement, reports CBS News.
