Kolkata, May 24 -- In a significant decision, the state government has made it clear that there will be no more Eid prayers at Kolkata's iconic Red Road and instead the Brigade Parade Ground has been officially approved as the new venue for the annual congregation.

The decision, sources said, has been taken primarily on security grounds.

For years, Eid prayers at Red Road had evolved into one of Bengal's most prominent religious gatherings, particularly during the Trinamool Congress era.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's appearance at the venue every Eid morning became an established political and social tradition.

In recent years, Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had also begun accompanying her to the event.
