Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 28 -- Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday paid solemn tribute to former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri on his death anniversary, describing him as one of the strongest and most enduring symbols of secular India who was martyred in the 2002 Gujarat violence.
Referring to the Gulberg Society massacre in Ahmedabad, the Chief Minister said Jafri was among the 69 people who were burnt to death in the arson attack carried out during the communal carnage on February 28, 2002.
He termed the incident one of the darkest chapters in independent India's history and a grim reflection of the targeted violence unleashed against minorities.
