Chennai, Aug. 24 -- The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday informed the Madras High Court that it has no plans to announce by-elections for five Tamil Nadu Assembly seats until the pending election pleas are disposed of, even as the Court ordered notices to the petitioners after the Tamil Nadu government prayed for expediting the hearing citing non-representation of these seats in the Legislative Assembly.
When the petition filed by one Venkatachalapathy from Palayamkottai from southern Tirunelveli district, was taken up for hearing, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G.Arul Murugan also extended the stay barring the ECI to hold bypolls till September 8.
