New Delhi, May 22 -- The Election Commission of India on Friday announced by-elections to two Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, with polling scheduled for June 18 to fill vacancies caused by the resignations of sitting members.

According to an official press note issued by the Commission, the vacancies arose following the resignations of Sunetra Ajit Pawar from Maharashtra on May 6 and C Ve Shanmugam from Tamil Nadu on May 7. The terms of the two seats were originally due to end in July 2028 and June 2028 respectively.
