Srinagar, April 13 -- The government is set to launch a demarcation exercise covering nearly 1.07 lakh kanals of Rakh land that has so far remained largely unmarked, with authorities in Kashmir also moving to trace ancient stone markers from the Dogra era to restore boundaries and prevent encroachment.

Rakhs were historically designated as vast stretches of uncultivated or semi-cultivated land, maintained for common grazing, timber, fuelwood and other community needs. During the reign of the Dogra Maharajas, a systematic land management system was introduced, with large dressed stones placed at regular intervals to clearly define and permanently mark boundaries.
