London, June 24 -- After months of disruption, dozens of commercial vessels began transiting the newly designated evacuation corridors in and around the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, following a joint initiative by the UN International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and Oman to help move stranded ships and mariners out of the Persian Gulf.

According to tracking data monitored by CBS News, a significant number of cargo vessels and tankers were either using the routes or heading toward them after the temporary maritime corridors were announced earlier this week.
