Kolkata, Aug. 23 -- West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh warned that the administration could resort to encounters, similar to the recent action in Baruipur, to curb the activities of mafias, criminals and drug addicts in Kharagpur.

Speaking at the inauguration of a BJP party office in Kharagpur on Sunday, Ghosh said the police had been given a free hand to act against anti-social elements and claimed that normalcy would return to the town before Durga Puja.

"The police will take action and, if necessary, pull the trigger. If criminals enter Kharagpur, they may face bullets even before they have their meal," Ghosh said, issuing a stern warning to criminals involved in extortion, drug-related activities and other offences.
