Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- A depression close to Kolkata brought the city to a standstill on Monday, triggering incessant overnight rain, widespread waterlogging and major traffic disruption, while heavy to very heavy showers lashed North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore.

The system intensified from a well-marked low-pressure area at around 5.30 am and was about 30 km from Kolkata by 11.30 am, a Regional Meteorological Centre official said.

Several parts of Kolkata and its adjoining areas were waterlogged, including Thanthania, C R Avenue, parts of Jadavpur and Salt Lake.
