Chandigarh, Feb. 23 -- Tensions escalated in the Bholath constituency of Punjab's Kapurthala district on Monday morning as the local administration, backed by a massive police contingent, carried out a demolition drive at the ancestral residence of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in Ramgarh.

The action, which involved the removal of a gate located in a lane adjacent to the legislator's home, sparked intense protests from Khaira's supporters and drew sharp condemnation from the top leadership of the Opposition.
