New Delhi, June 17 -- After a brief respite from the heat, hot and humid conditions returned to Delhi on Wednesday, with daytime temperatures edging closer to the 40-degree Celsius mark.

At Safdarjung, the city's base weather station, the maximum temperature settled at 38.1 deg C, registering a sharp single-day increase of 4.8 deg C. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.8 deg C, which was 3.7 deg C below normal for this time of the year.

The Ridge observatory recorded the highest maximum temperature in the city at 39.2 deg C, nearly touching the 40 deg C mark, according to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) evening bulletin.
