Bengaluru, June 21 -- union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday triggered a fresh political debate over the Cauvery water dispute, alleging that Karnataka's reservoirs are effectively being treated as "machines to release water" to Tamil Nadu.
Speaking on inter-state water sharing issues, Kumaraswamy said Karnataka was being compelled to release water even during low-storage conditions, raising concerns over the impact on farmers in the Cauvery basin regions of the state.
He argued that the existing regulatory mechanism leaves limited flexibility for Karnataka to protect its irrigation needs during distress years, intensifying anxieties among cultivators dependent on reservoir supply.
