Hyderabad, May 24 -- Communist Party of India (CPI) National Secretary K Ramakrishna on Sunday strongly criticised the Narendra Modi-led NDA government over the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices, alleging that the Centre was burdening the common people with repeated fuel hikes.

In a statement issued from Hyderabad, Ramakrishna said petrol and diesel prices had been increased by nearly Rs 4.80 within a week, including a Rs 3 per litre hike on Friday, making fuel unaffordable for ordinary citizens.

He accused the Centre of failing to reduce fuel prices even when international crude oil prices were low and alleged that the government had imposed heavy taxes on petroleum products.
