Siliguri, June 28 -- Continuous heavy rainfall across northern North Bengal and its catchment areas, particularly in Bhutan, has caused several Bhutan-origin rivers to swell and overflow, sending a huge volume of water into the Central Dooars region of Jalpaiguri and adjoining areas.
A diversion over the Torsa River at Jaigaon in Alipurduar district was washed away on Sunday, disrupting traffic movement between India and Bhutan. The diversion had been constructed last year to facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles after the existing bridge was declared unsafe for such traffic. The original bridge, however, remains operational for light vehicles.
