Shillong, Sept. 16 -- Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has asserted that any discussion on implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Meghalaya must take into account the state's distinct tribal and matrilineal traditions.
He further stressed that no decision should be taken without first consulting citizens and stakeholders.
"If you recall, in my opening remarks when I talked about UCC, I had said that as a concept, UCC being applied to India is something that does not make sense to me," the CM said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the UCC will be introduced in all states by 2029.
However, the CM stated that the Centre's reported position that the UCC will be state-specific has changed the nature of the discussion.
