New Delhi, Sept. 15 -- Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi government of opening the door to charges on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, alleging that a recent notification under the amended Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, has removed a clear legal safeguard against fees on transactions above Rs 2,000.

Ramesh said the development vindicated the warning he had issued on August 6, 2026, when he had raised concerns over the possibility of UPI transactions being brought under a fee regime. He noted that the issue had then drawn a response from union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
