New Delhi, April 8 -- The Congress on Wednesday criticized the Centre's handling of developments in West Asia, alleging that "missteps" by the government had allowed Pakistan to position itself as a mediator in the ongoing hostilities, thereby undermining India's diplomatic standing.

In a statement issued by its Foreign Affairs Department, the party said India was "better placed to serve as a credible interlocutor" between the warring sides but had failed to capitalize on the opportunity. "The BJP government's missteps have led to Pakistan playing a role in mediating between the warring parties," the statement said, referring to the recent interim cessation of hostilities in the region.
