Ashok RainaDharamshala, March 5 -- The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has surprised many political observers by nominating Kangra District Congress Committee chief Anurag Sharma as the party's candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh. The seat will fall vacant after the completion of the six-year term of BJP member Indu Goswami on April 8.
The decision marks a shift from the party's usual practice of fielding nationally prominent leaders for Rajya Sabha seats from Himachal Pradesh. Instead, Congress has opted for a grassroots leader from within the state, a move seen as politically cautious and strategically significant after the embarrassment it faced in the 2024 Rajya Sabha election.
