Kolkata, March 29 -- The Indian National Congress on Sunday announced its candidates for 284 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, kickstarting its move to contest the state election independently after several years.

Among the big names, former state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been fielded from Baharampur, while ex Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Benazir Noor will contest from Malatipur in Malda district.

In the high-profile Bhabanipur seat, Congress has nominated Pradip Prasad to take on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the All India Trinamul Congress and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
