Bengaluru, April 22 -- The expiry of preventive detention under the COFEPOSA Act has paved the way for the release of actress Ranya Rao from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison here on Wednesday, bringing a dramatic legal turn in a high-value gold smuggling case.
Ranya walked out of jail after completing one year under COFEPOSA, a stringent law designed to deny bail in smuggling cases. Although she had secured bail in the primary case months ago, the preventive detention had kept her behind bars until now.
An Economic Offences Court granted her conditional release, directing her not to leave the country and to cooperate with investigators. Soon after her release, Ranya left the prison premises in her lawyer's car and returned home.
