Guwahati, April 9 -- Amid stringent security, brisk polling was reported from across Assam as 59.63 per cent of the electors exercised their democratic rights despite heavy rains in parts of the state during the first six hours of voting in the single-phase Assembly election on Thursday.
"The voter turnout was approximately 59.63 per cent as of 1 pm," the Election Commission of India said.
The polling was progressing peacefully with no reports of any untoward incident so far, sources said.
Among the prominent personalities who have already cast their votes are Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Rajor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi and Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag.
