Manila, July 22 -- China on Wednesday urged the United States to "respect" its "core interests" and adhere to the "one-China principle" as the two countries sought to stabilise ties ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's expected visit to the United States later this year.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed Beijing's position during talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila.

According to China's official Xinhua news agency, Wang told Rubio that the United States should "properly manage differences" and "address China's legitimate concerns," while reaffirming Beijing's long-standing demand that Washington uphold the one-China policy.
