Chandigarh, June 26 -- An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his service pistol at his official quarters in Tarn Taran district, police said.

The deceased, identified as Amarjit Singh, had been serving as the in-charge of the Kairon police post for nearly four months.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred on Thursday night after the officer returned from naka duty.

Police sources said Amarjit Singh had dinner with fellow personnel before retiring to his government quarters at around 9:30 pm. A short while later, colleagues heard a gunshot and rushed to the room.
