Mumbai, March 28 -- A week after stepping down as the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women's Commission, Nationalist Congress Party leader Rupali Chakankar resigned as the party women's wing chief, sources said on Saturday.

Her resignation came following the self-styled godman Ashok Kharat's arrest in Nashik on charges of sexual assault and rape, and the emergence of photographs purportedly showing her proximity with him.

The controversy led to intervention by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who reportedly directed her to resign from her government post last week.
