New Delhi, Oct. 3 -- The Central government has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence for studies in Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit, two years after the five languages were accorded classical language status.
The Ministry of Education's Department of Higher Education, in an office memorandum dated October 1, approved separate centres for each of the five languages to strengthen academic research, digitisation, preservation and dissemination of their heritage.
Under the decision, the Centre of Excellence for Classical Assamese will be established at Tezpur University in Assam, while Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal will host the centre for Classical Bengali.
