Chandigarh, April 14 -- The Central government has officially notified an amendment to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Rules, 1974, effectively ending the decades-old dominance of Punjab and Haryana in the selection of top administrative posts.
Under the newly titled Bhakra Beas Management Board (Amendment) Rules, 2026, the critical positions of Member (Power) and Member (Irrigation) have been opened to officers from across India, moving away from the traditional convention that favoured these two states.
Historically, since the reorganization of Punjab in 1966, the post of Member (Power) was traditionally held by an officer from Punjab, while Member (Irrigation) was filled by an appointee from Haryana.
