Bengaluru, July 30 -- Karnataka suffered a fresh setback in the Cauvery water dispute on Thursday after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) rejected the state's plea citing water stress and directed it to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, reigniting political and public anger in the Cauvery basin region.
The CWMA order, which will be effective retrospectively from July 29, came despite Karnataka's contention that its reservoirs were under pressure and that meeting the water requirements of its own farmers, drinking water needs and livestock remained a challenge.
