Shivamogga, July 29 -- Escalating its attack on the Karnataka government over the Cauvery water-sharing issue, BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra on Wednesday announced a major protest in Mandya on July 31, accusing the Congress government of sacrificing the interests of the State's farmers by releasing water to Tamil Nadu despite an emerging water shortage.

Addressing reporters here, Vijayendra alleged that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had advised farmers in the Cauvery basin against taking up cultivation due to inadequate water availability, while simultaneously releasing water to the neighbouring State.
