New Delhi, April 8 -- The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) on Wednesday imposed a penalty of over Rs 60 crore on six thermal power plants, which defaulted on environmental rules.

According to the pollution watchdog, the power plants violated the Environmental (Utilisation of Crop Residue by Thermal Power Plants) Rules, 2023, which mandates mixing 5 per cent of biomass pellets or briquettes made of paddy straw along with coal for energy generation.

Among the six violators, five are government-managed plants, one each from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and two from Himachal Pradesh, which together accounted for 50 per cent of the fine. While the sole private-run operator, Talwandi Sabo Power Limited ...
