Kolkata, Aug. 18 -- In a significant decision, the Calcutta High Court has imposed an interim stay on a West Bengal government notification ordering the re-verification of caste certificates issued since 2011.
The notification, issued by the state government on May 14, said that caste certificates issued to people belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 2011 onwards would be verified.
It also said that certificates found to be fake could be cancelled.
A division bench headed by acting Chief Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty issued the interim stay after the decision was challenged in court.
