Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- The Calcutta High Court granted interim protection from arrest to Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad, who had approached the court apprehending arrest in a case involving allegations of extortion and threats.

Justice Kaushik Chanda directed on Tuesday that no coercive action be taken against Azad at this stage.

However, the court ordered him to cooperate with the investigation being conducted by the state CID.

The CID has already started probing the allegations and summoned the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha MP for questioning.

The court directed Azad to appear before the CID on September 22.

If further questioning is required, the agency may summon him again by serving seven days' notice.
