Mumbai, Sept. 8 -- The Bombay High Court has refused to interfere with criminal defamation proceedings initiated against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged derogatory remarks concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The complaint was instituted by a local BJP functionary, who alleged that Gandhi's remarks describing the Prime Minister as "Choro Ke Sardar" and "Commander-in-Chief" were defamatory and intended to tarnish the reputation of the Prime Minister as well as members of the ruling party.

Seeking quashing of the complaint, Gandhi's legal team argued that the alleged statements did not specifically name the BJP or refer to any clearly identifiable class of persons. Consequentl...
