Agartala, May 4 -- The BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty secured victory in North Tripura's Dharmanagar by-election by a margin of 18,290 votes, which raised the saffron tally in the Tripura assembly to 33.

He defeated his nearest rival of CPI-M party, Amitabha Datta. While Chakraborty secured 24,291 votes, Datta got only 6,001 votes, and Congress nominee Chayan Bhattacharjee scored 5,936 votes. Significantly, NOTA got 444 votes in the bypoll.

In the 60-member Tripura assembly, BJP now has 32 MLAs, and its alliance partner IPFT has one, and Tipra Motha has 13 members. On the other hand, the opposition CPI-M and Congress have 10 and 3 legislators, respectively.
