Kolkata, May 17 -- A week after coming to power the BJP government in West Bengal approved a long-pending proposal to hand over several stretches of national highways to central agencies, a move which was kept on hold by the previous Mamata Banerjee government.

The decision, taken by the new administration at Nabanna, is aimed at strengthening border security, improving road infrastructure and accelerating development in strategically important areas of North Bengal and the international border regions.
