Vijayapura, June 23 -- In a dramatic escalation in the Bhima riverbank massacre probe, police shot and arrested the prime accused in the brutal killing of six people after he allegedly attacked officers and attempted to flee during a high-risk operation in Karnataka's Vijayapura district.

The accused, Mahesh Talawar, a key conspirator in the contract-style mass killing near Govindapura village on May 29, sustained a bullet injury to his leg when Chadachan police opened fire in self-defence near Ittangihal village while attempting to apprehend him.
