Mumbai, June 11 -- In a major move to enhance public transportation, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) administration has initiated plans to induct 1,500 new air-conditioned electric midi buses into its fleet. Midi buses are single decker buses larger than minibuses but smaller than regular buses.
The decision comes in response to Mumbai's growing population, increasing passenger traffic at railway and metro stations, and the rising demand for better connectivity in interior localities.
Rather than purchasing the buses outright, BEST plans to lease them for a period of 12 years. A tendering process has already been conducted, and several companies have been shortlisted, a BEST statement said.
