Krishnagar, Sept. 15 -- Bengal may celebrate Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay as icons, but has shown a curious indifference to Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay-even as his works continue to enjoy a vast readership beyond Bengal, speakers at Kalyani University said on Tuesday.
They blamed a section of the Bengali elite and intelligentsia for reducing Sarat Chandra's literature to "ordinary family stories", arguing that the dismissal says more about Bengal's growing disconnect with its literary roots than about the writer's enduring relevance.
Kalyani University organised a day-long seminar to mark Sarat Chandra's 150th birth anniversary, bringing together writers, academics, filmmakers, researchers and students.
