Kolkata, May 4 -- In a stunning political upset, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lost to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes, marking her second high-profile defeat to her former aide after Nandigram in 2021.

The Election Commission figures say that Banerjee has been defeated by a margin of 15,105 votes.

While Adhikari got 73,917 votes, Banerjee managed to get 58,812 votes, registering her second defeat in two consecutive assembly elections.

Earlier in 2021, she was defeated by Adhikari in Nandigram by a narrow margin of 1,500 votes.
