Siliguri, Sept. 28 -- Former minister and CPI(M) leader Asok Bhattacharya on Monday said he would break the iron fencing erected by the Railways to permanently close the level crossing at Phuleshwari in Siliguri if the authorities failed to reopen it in the interest of the people.
"We will break the railway fencing if necessary, as soon as possible," Bhattacharya said while addressing the media.
He said that despite an underpass having been constructed around 15 years ago with the objective of eventually closing the level crossing, the gate had continued to remain operational for years.
The Railway authorities closed the Phuleshwari crossing with iron fencing two days ago, forcing thousands of residents to use the narrow underpass.
