Kolkata, June 23 -- A day after the West Bengal BJP government proposed a budgetary allocation of Rs 2,165.42 crore for minority development, a BJP MLA on Tuesday questioned the very need for a separate Minority Affairs Department in a secular state.

"After yesterday's Budget, many people asked me what had been done for minorities. I want to ask the government whether there is any need for a Minority Affairs Department if the state is truly secular. By constantly identifying people as minorities and majorities, we ourselves are creating divisions among citizens," Baranagar MLA Sajal Ghosh said while participating in the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address in the Assembly.
