Siliguri, June 19 -- The resignation of Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, a senior Trinamool Congress leader, has plunged the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) into an unexpected leadership crisis at a time when the city is grappling with monsoon-related challenges, including waterlogging in several low-lying wards.

Although Deb submitted his resignation on Thursday, it became effective on Friday after the resignation letter, dated June 19, was formally accepted by the Municipal Commissioner and communicated to the BJP-led state government.
