Kolkata, Oct. 17 -- Tragedy marred the festive Durga Puja spirit here as multiple people died in a stampede in north Kolkata's Chorbagan Sarbojonin Durga Puja pandal here on Saturday evening.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who landed in the city in the evening, said there were multiple casualties.
Unconfirmed reports said 18 people lost their lives, even as the city police said 40 injured people were hospitalised after the stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal at 19.40 hours.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay have arrived at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital, and others are also heading to the facility.
