Kolkata, June 15 -- An otherwise little-known political outfit, the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), has suddenly emerged at the centre of political discussions in West Bengal following reports that more than two-thirds of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) parliamentary party may be preparing to join the organisation.

The speculation triggered unprecedented activity on Monday at the party's registered office in Banipur under Sankrail in Howrah district. The area witnessed a heavy deployment of police and Central forces as large crowds gathered near the premises, forcing law enforcement agencies to make elaborate arrangements to maintain order. The development has taken even some of the party's founding members by surprise.
