Siliguri, June 17 -- The Labour Department has convened a tripartite meeting to discuss the ongoing crisis at Longview Tea Estate, near West Bengal's Siliguri city, following 50 days of relay hunger strike by workers and two phases of a 72-hour hunger strike over unpaid dues.
The first phase of the 72-hour hunger strike began on June 13 after workers intensified their agitation, alleging that neither the management nor the government had taken any meaningful steps despite their relay hunger strike, which commenced on April 21.
The second phase of the fast began on June 16, coinciding with Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's visit to Kurseong for official and political programmes.
