Siliguri, Sept. 15 -- Elephants are the "civil engineers of forests" for their role in shaping and sustaining ecosystems, Jaldapara Divisional Forest Officer Parveen Kaswan said on Engineers' Day on Tuesday.

In a social-media post, Kaswan highlighted how elephants reshape forest landscapes and create conditions that benefit several other species.

"Do you know that elephants are the civil engineers of our forests?" Kaswan asked.

"Every forest walk reveals how they quietly reshape the landscape. Their massive feet create and maintain trails that are later used by deer, gaurs, rhinos, tigers, and even people. These pathways improve movement through dense forests and grasslands," he said.
