Kolkata, May 30 -- Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked by protesters while on his way to visit the family of a party worker killed in post-poll violence in Sonarpur of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Saturday afternoon.

Banerjee, who chose to ride a motorcycle instead of a four-wheeler amid protests along the route, came under attack as he approached the residence of the slain TMC worker Sanju Karmakar.

According to party leaders, protesters physically assaulted Banerjee, hitting him on the head, neck and body. Eggs and shoes were also thrown at him, while the buttons of his white shirt were torn during the scuffle.
