Krishnagar, Sept. 13 -- At 80, Dulal Biswas has begun a 1,500-km cycle ride to Delhi with a message for the Central government: save the dying Jalangi before it is too late.
Biswas, accompanied by fellow cyclist and environmental campaigner Tarak Chandra Pal, 55, set out from Krishnagar on Sunday to seek urgent intervention for the rejuvenation of the Jalangi and Anjana rivers and the protection of the region's wetlands and water bodies.
Backed by Save Jalangi, the cyclists are expected to reach Delhi in 17 to 18 days. The expedition has been timed around World Rivers Day on September 27, with the campaign seeking to push the deteriorating condition of the rivers onto the national agenda.
